For quite some time now, months actually, we have been preparing and rehearsing our Nativity Play. Things are going quite well. When I say "going quite well" I mean: We reviewed about a dozen plays and even wrote one ourselves before finding the perfect script. We then modified some of the script. "Wrote out" two of the characters and cast everyone in their roles. Then we did some recasting.
The kids are taking wonderful initiative and memorizing their lines and music. We have some first time soloist and a lot of dynamic actors. Controlled chaos would be an apt description of one or two of the rehearsals we've had.
I've been working with the choir for several years now, and I've learned that everything will come together in the end. Mistakes are not the end of the world. And the best thing to do is keep calm and keep working. This year I learned something new. It was important to me that we have a really great play. I wanted this to be our best year yet. So I hunted for the right script, scrambled to get the best special effects and lighting, and searched for that elusive "IT" factor.
I came to realize that while those things are great and details are important, we can focus on them and miss the whole point. The story of Christ's birth in its sweet simplicity is powerful and compelling. The difference it makes in our lives, the impact it has on our world, the Hope of Victory over the grave that it gives us. It is enough.
I learned that the story is what is important and it is already perfect. I shared my thoughts with the youth choir and we decided it would be the best play ever because we would have the best attitudes, give the best effort, and have the best fun.
Weeks later we are still practicing and it's almost here. There have been family emergencies, minor delays, and detours along the way. I know God knew these things would happen and he sent us the perfect script for this year. It's simple, it's sweet, and it has a healthy dose of humor.
The kids have really enjoyed working on it and I'm excited to see it performed. I'm thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of it.
God has blessed us so much.
